Leintwardine

Leintwardine
Herefordshire

Dark Lane

The name of one of the two north to south streets through the village of Leintwardine is Watling Street. This is not the same as the Watling Street which runs from Dover to London and then to Wroxeter. This is sometimes known as Watling Street West. South of the River Wye it is called Stony Street. This Roman Road connected Chester to Caerleon and ran north to south through Herefordshire. Further south it runs through the Roman town of Magnis at Kenchester.

Archaeological records from Leintwardine are held by Historic Herefordshire On Line

Leintwardine was archaeologically examined by the Central Marches Historic Towns Survey (1992-6). The report is available to download from the Archaeological Data Service website.
